Facelift Surgery
What is a Facelift?
A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure
to reduce the signs of facial aging. This includes the loss of skin elasticity
and firmness, sagging tissues and wrinkles, and the loss of muscle tone
of the face and neck. Sagging in the midface can create a deep crease below
the lower eyelid (called a tear trough) and between the nose and mouth (nasolabial
fold) that may make you appear tired and sad. Loose skin and excess fatty
deposits under the chin and jaw can make even a person of normal weight
appear to have a “double chin.” The surgery affects the side
of the face and neck. It is generally “custom tailored” to the
individual’s needs. Sometimes liposuction is also performed in conjunction
with a facelift to obtain the best overall result. A facelift is intended
to give the patient a more rested and youthful contour to the face and neck.
Facelifts range in size from “mini” to “standard”
depending on location and the extent of skin laxity. A traditional facelift
restores the midface, jowls, and neck, allowing excess skin to be removed.
How is the procedure done?
A facelift is performed on an outpatient basis (normally in our own state-licensed
ambulatory surgery center) under general anesthesia. Incisions are made
within the hairline (or along the hair margin) above the ear, extending
down around the lobe and ending in or below the hairline behind the ear.
The subcutaneous layers and neck muscles are tightened, the facial skin
is redraped and lifted, and the excess skin is removed.
The patient goes home with head and neck wrapped in dressings, which
are usually removed the next day. Minimal initial discomfort is easily
controlled with oral medication. Sutures are removed within 14 days. Bruising
and swelling decrease to “socially acceptable” levels in 10-20
days. The final result is evident in 4-6 weeks or sooner with continued
improvement for several months.
Where do I begin?
A consultation with one of our plastic surgeons is the first step to
learn how a facelift can improve an aging face and neck. One of our surgeons
can educate you about a facelift in a non-pressured environment. Some
of the topics that he will discuss with you include:
- Your goals, anatomy, and an evaluation of your current signs of aging
- The options available to you for facial rejuvenation
- The likely outcome, the potential risks, and some of the complications
associated with a facelift
- The healing process and the timeframe in which to expect the results
of the facelift to become apparent
- Pre-op care to obtain the best surgical result
- An evaluation of your skin, muscle, and bone structure and the specific
conditions that contribute to your aging appearance
- Any questions or concerns that you may have regarding a facelift
If you are interested in a facelift, we encourage you to keep several
things in mind. A facelift is designed to correct many of the aging features,
restoring a more youthful, rested appearance with uplifted contours and
improved tone in facial skin and underlying muscle, but it does not change
your fundamental appearance and cannot stop the aging process.
A facelift is best performed on adult men and women who feel that their
outward facial aging no longer reflects the youth and vigor they feel
physically and emotionally. Good candidates are:
- Non-smokers
- Healthy individuals with no life-threatening illnesses or conditions
that can impair healing
- Individuals with a positive outlook and specific, but realistic goals
in mind for improvement of their appearance
